Steven McCullen, PE

Steven McCullen is a Vice President with Spring Stoops McCullen Engineering, PA. Steven earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1990. He began his career as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) at Knott & Roberts Engineering Associates in 1991. He received his Professional Engineers license in 1996.

Steven worked for Baker Engineering Associates as Project Manager and Electrical Department Head from 1997 to 2001. He then worked for RMF Engineering Inc. as Project Manager and Head Electrical Engineer for the Buildings Electrical Group prior to forming Spring Stoops McCullen Engineering with Keith Spring and Dave Stoops in 2004.

Steven has project experience with area universities, including North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. He also has built a strong reputation with various healthcare facilities such as Duke Regional Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, UNC Hospitals and Rex Hospital among others.

Steven has worked with several North Carolina K-12 systems.  Systems include Durham Public Schools, Wake County Public School System, Alamance-Burlington School System, and the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. He has experience with university lab projects including four new science buildings at North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T State University, Winston-Salem State University and Fayetteville State University. His experience also includes office buildings, art venues and athletic facilities.

Steven has been involved in all aspects of the electrical design.His expertise includes indoor and outdoor lighting, fire alarm, power generation and distribution, telecommunications and nurse call systems. Steven keeps up to date on current technology and code requirements so that his designs provide the latest in functionality and safety.

Steven’s responsibilities encompass project management from evaluation, budgeting  and design through the bid phase, construction and final inspection.

Steven demonstrates creativity and innovation in his design and places a high value on communicating with the client and all parties involved with the design and construction of the project.  Steven recently earned his LEED AP certification, in which he demonstrated his understanding of green building practices.

Steven lives on the northern side of Durham with his wife and has  three adult children. One of those children, Matthew, joined the firm as an Electrical Engineer Intern in January 2023. Steven enjoys weightlifting and NC State sports.
